Bio-packaging based on natural resources from the Amazon

Needs Addressed

This initiative contributes to the partial replacement of petrochemical plastics with alternatives made from natural, locally available resources, aiming to help reduce pollution in the Amazon. Specifically, it proposes single-use and quickly disposable packaging such as supermarket bags or trays for transporting prepared foods.

About the technology

This project involves the development of both flexible and rigid packaging made from natural resources of the Amazon, such as cassava starch and banana agro-waste. The motivation behind this initiative is to reduce plastic waste in Amazonian communities, where the accumulation of such materials has become a serious problem. Through a project implemented by the SINCHI Institute and funded by the General System of Royalties, ICTA has been involved since 2023, leading the production of bio-packaging at the laboratory scale and supporting its scale-up to the pilot level.
